Protesters rally nationwide to 'Defund Planned Parenthood'

About 20 people, including some children, lined the sidewalk for a Defund Planned Parenthood rally, while about half a dozen counter-protesters came out to show their support for the organization. Emboldened by the election of President Donald Trump, who vowed during his campaign to take away federal funding for Planned Parenthood, activists are trying to prod Congress to make good on the promise.

Planned Parenthood supporters in turn have organised 150 counter-demonstrations outside politicians' offices and government buildings.

We must stop killing God's most lovely creation, the most innocent of the innocent, who are created in the image and likeness of God our creator. Initial reports indicate the rallies were vocal and peaceful. It's not about women's rights.

Rallies for and against Planned Parenthood took place across the United States on Saturday, and about 100 people in Ithaca attended a rally in support of the organization at Dewitt Park.

Many protestors in Siouxland share this same hope and belief.

The protests follow the 44th March for Life on January 27, when tens of thousands of people gathered in Washington, D.C., for the annual anti-abortion rights rally.

Locally, protesters met across the street from the Planned Parenthood on West Ridge Road in Greece.

The Supreme Court legalized abortion in the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling but US law prohibits the use of federal funds for abortions.

President Trump has made four specific commitments to the pro-life movement, including reallocating Planned Parenthood's taxpayer funding to comprehensive, whole-woman healthcare centers. "In voting to defund Planned Parenthood, legislators are subverting the will of the people and endangering health and the lives of thousands of Virginia women for purely ideological and political reasons".

Lon Schroeder, 61, held a sign that read "Planned Parenthood LIES to you". While defunders formed a thin line on the curb lawn for most of a block, the larger crowd defending Planned Parenthood was packed 3, 4 and 5 deep for a block and a half on the other side of the street.

"I don't see this whole abortion thing, pro-choice, pro-life, as a religious issue", Mary Jo Thayer said. "I think that is well documented, we don't have to wonder", said Carpentier.
