New Haven county ranks lowest in Connecticut County Health Rankings

"So your zip code is the best predictor of how long and how well you'll live", said Jan O'Neill, Associate Researcher and Community Coach with the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps.

"From 2000 to 2015, more than half a million people died from drug overdoses" nationwide, with the steepest increase from 2009 to 2015, the report said. Other counties in the bottom five for health outcomes were Adams, Scioto, Gallia and Jackson.

Hampden County came in last; 14th out of 14 counties. "But do they tell us something we didn't know two weeks ago?"

Monroe County Health Department Administrator John Wagner could not immediately be reached for comment.

"We are celebrating the improvements that have been made in the county, but also want to draw attention to our decline in the health factor ranking which moved from 6 to 15", he said. "We are looking to do a lot more with walking fitness, accessibility and community gardens".

"We need to continue to understand, identify and address institutional and systemic barriers that keep everyone from attaining their highest level of health".

Similarly, Douglas County saw a slight decrease in premature deaths. Top local priorities identified by the community in the CHNA are: mental health, obesity, motor vehicle injuries (especially among teens), vaccine preventable diseases, and financial stress/homelessness.

Franklin County ranked eighth in Social & Economic Factors.

The 2016 rankings for metro-east counties were as follows: St. Clair 93rd; Monroe 3rd; Clinton 12th; Madison 60th, and Randolph 65th.

Austin Public Health said the rankings serve to help build "a culture of health so that everyone has the opportunity to be healthy and fulfill their human potential".

The statistics the rankings are based on are significantly affected by everyday life activities, Kelly said. Last in the rankings is the Bronx. "But the health department alone can't do that".

This year, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation took a closer look at premature deaths (deaths occurring among people under age 75) in assigning county health rankings.

The survey says 18 percent of people report they are in poor or fair health.

The report also shows that one-in-five New Mexicans, or 20 percent, report their health as fair or poor, compared with a USA median of 16 percent, according to the 2017 County Health Rankings and Roadmaps.

"We have fewer doctors per person in this county than numerous other counties", he said. The county is 84th, which is three spots worse than in 2016.

The rankings recognized diabetes monitoring in the county as an area of strength.

Washington County is Oregon's healthiest county and Klamath County is the least healthy county, according to new rankings released Wednesday by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. All in all, the report looks at more than 30 individual health factors including income inequality, housing, jobs, education and more.
