She may just be 19 years old but Malala Yousafzai has achieved much more than most of will in a lifetime.
Nobel Peace laureate Malala Yousafzai became only the sixth person to receive honorary Canadian citizenship Wednesday, as she called on the country to be bold in advocating for girls' education.
On Monday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres designated Yousafzai as a UN Messenger of Peace with a special focus on girls' education.
Her appearance was kept secret from all but a few people involved in setting up the the visit, lancasteronline reported. Many are forced to marry early or must work or care for younger siblings, denying them their right to education.
United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric had earlier announced that the 19-year-old education advocate will focus worldwide attention on the need for all girls to go to school.
Mohammad Khan, a prominent human rights activist and lawyer based in Swat, said he was pleased that the worldwide community has appreciated Yousafzai's efforts and the ordeal she has gone through for the sake of women's rights and education.
What binds them all together is that they are leaders who have played iconic roles in world history, said Chris Alexander, the former Conservative immigration minister who oversaw the technical process behind getting Yousafzai citizenship. That is crucial. We can not ignore it.
"But Muslim people also need to unite and stand strongly against the extremists and against the terrorists (and say) that they are not us".
