Nike's Celebrating Equality on Jackie Robinson Day

Posted April 16, 2017

The first 40,000 fans at Saturday's game against Arizona receive a replica of the statue.

I suspect my dad, as I had with my daughter, tried to explain to me the significance of Robinson - how he had not only broken baseball's color barrier, but in his brief remarks that day, he implored Major League Baseball to do more by hiring its first black manager.

- David Price (@DAVIDprice24) April 15, 2017In 1947, Jackie Robinson stood up in front of thousands of people who were rooting against him & did what he did best - played ball! Over the following 12 seasons, eight of the National League MVP awards were won by black men. "I have a Jackie Robison wall at my house, in my weight room, there's Jackie on his wall, along with me, so, it's just that I'm not that overly happy about it because I think we should do this every day instead of just one day a year".

The 6-foot-5 tall bronze statue, by Oakland sculptor Branly Cadet, depicts Robinson as a rookie in 1947 sliding into home plate, a nod to his aggressive baserunning.

Here are some of Robinson's most memorable career moments.

I go back now to photos of Robinson, on that day in Cincinnati in the autumn of 1972.

Will he or won't he? Nurkic's return still uncertain
Anthony quickly responded on Instagram with a post that was surely directed to Phil Jackson's comments. Anthony has been rumored in trade talk several times throughout the last few seasons.

The Dodgers will take on the Diamondbacks that day.

The statue is located in the left field reserve plaza with a view of downtown Los Angeles and Elysian Park. It weighs 700 pounds and is secured with a 150-pound steel rod. He used to come home and say, 'They gave me a standing ovation, ' and [he] was so shocked.

Jackie Robinson is immortalized by statues in Canada, Connecticut, Florida and New Jersey, and by two statues in NY. This is the third straight year UCLA has unveiled special Jackie Robinson-inspired jerseys to honor his memory. Jackie Robinson's contributions both to the game and society will not be forgotten. "There's still lots and lots of struggles in this world and it's a very complicated place".

Despite the inauspicious debut, Robinson would play in 151 games.
