The Dominican College golf team had a first round score of 300 to be in second place after day one of the 2017 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Golf Regional being played at The Resort at Glade Springs. Florida State's seminole hole certainly came on hole No. 14 as senior Lydia Gumm, Morgane Metraux and freshman Amanda Doherty all earned birdies to help the team cement its second place standing and close the gap on Florida. Once play began, the 18-team field was greeted by colder than normal temperatures in the 40's and 50's and above average wind gusts throughout the round. 10 and 12, the Carolina newcomer bounced back with another birdie on the par-4 16th.

After three straight pars on the par four 11th, par five 12th and par three 13th, Smith carded back-to-back bogeys before finishing her opening nine par, par and her lone birdie of the round on the par four 368-yard 18th hole. Tech also had a 5-par average of 4.60 (-8). Both players carded one birdie and six bogeys on the day.

In each of their last four tournaments, the Tech women have finished higher than their position after the first round, including a leap from last place to third at the Big 12 tournament. "Our first day is always the rough start, so we're always trying to fight back the second and third day".

Playing the most important event of the year on their home course, the Lady Raiders got past that obstacle. Le Moyne College and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) member, Wilmington University are tied for fifth place with a score 304. She was able to get the ball up to the hill with the right speed and it tumbled into the hole to get her in for three at the par 5, 496-yard hole on the Rawls Course at Texas Tech. Her even par round of 72 puts her in a tie for second place heading into tomorrow's second round.
