Comcast Sportsnet Analyst Alan May Previews Game 7 Between Capitals Vs Penguins

Posted May 12, 2017

While "Game 7" may be the most exciting phrase in sports to a lot of people, it's probably not for the Washington Capitals.

Marc-Andre Fleury turned back the clock with a brilliant 29-save shutout, Bryan Rust and Patric Hornqvist scored and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Washington Capitals 2-0 in Game 7 on Wednesday night to advance to the Eastern Conference final.

So while the Capitals will once again head home, and head into months of uncertainty, the Penguins will face the Ottawa Senators in the Eastern Conference finals.

"We're trying", he said simply and then walked away.

"I don't think anything personally for him really matters, which is a great sign really", Trotz said before the playoffs. Chances came and went as Washington failed to get beyond the second round for the seventh time in as many chances in the Alex Ovechkin era.

Not only is Erik Karlsson-who tallied seven points against the Penguins in the regular season-dialed in and playing as well as any player left in the playoffs, but goaltender Craig Anderson has proved brilliant at times-including Game 6 against NY, when he racked up 37 saves to send the Rangers packing.

Their 2-0 victory at the Verizon Center improved the Pens record to 4-0 against the Capitals in Game 7s and 9-1 in all-time playoff series against Washington.

With that said, the Capitals were awful in game seven, generating a series-low 10 scoring chances, only five of which actually got to Fleury.

In the evening's first tilt, the Pittsburgh Penguins dispatched the Washington Capitals 2-0 in hostile territory to set up an Eastern Conference showdown against the Ottawa Senators-who sent the New York Rangers packing thanks to a 4-2 win in Game 6 on Tuesday night. Crosby appeared to be dazed and got up slowly, but he wasn't pulled from the game.

Braden Holtby stopped 26 shots for Washington, which enters an uncertain offseason with a number of unrestricted and restricted free agents.

Soon after reaching his half-century, Amla signaled intent, hitting the leg-spinner Ankit Soni for a six over long-off. Amla went to 50 off 35 balls, and along with Marsh, set the ideal platform for his side with a 125-run partnership.

The Ducks will be hoping Ryan Getzlaf can keep his strong series going for one final game and get Anaheim a rare win in the ultimate game of a series.

This particular group may have had its last chance.

The total has gone over in four of Pittsburgh's last five games on the road.

"They just kind of fell apart", Peters said. "We honestly thought that we were the best team in the playoffs and showed little flashes of it. Game 7" in his first chance with Washington.

After being tripped by Braden Holtby's stick on the goaltender's follow-through, Crosby went headfirst into the endboard...and he went in hard. Players like TJ Oshie, Justin Williams, and Kevin Shattenkirk are projected to leave.

Just moments after that, Penguins defenceman Chad Ruhwedel guessed wrong on a bank shot off the boards, allowing Daniel Winnik to break in alone.

WASHINGTON-There was a time when Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin spoke their rivalry out loud, back in the innocent days before anybody had a Stanley Cup, before anybody had Olympic gold, before anybody had 500 goals, before anybody had grey streaks through their hair, before anybody's career had been threatened by injury, or before anybody - Ovechkin, mostly -had their heart broken, and broken again. "You talk to the doctor", Crosby said Tuesday.

Anaheim outshot Edmonton 16-3 in that dominant second period but couldn't take the lead.

In game 6, a battered Penguins managed 2 late goals from Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin in the game.

And with about a minute left in that period, there was Backstrom with a 1-on-1 opportunity, but this shot plunked harmlessly against the side of Fleury's net.
