An important goal of Mental Health Awareness Month is to dispel myths to help end stigma.

For one, Saldana said, a Wellness and Mental Health Task Force is now gathering best practices and formulating plans to improve the Medical School's culture around mental health. While the material covered in each course is unique, both certification trainings are 8-hours long and both teach participants how to recognize the signs and symptoms of common mental illnesses and substance use disorders, de-escalate crisis situations safely and initiate timely referrals to mental health and substance abuse resources available in the community.

A growing number of mental health providers are considering closing their doors or curtailing services because of lack of funding. Rather than ask why so many people are living with mental health problems, the initiative asks why too few of us are thriving with good mental health.

This week has been designated as the 66 Annual Mental Health Week by the Canadian Mental Health Association. A small percentage of mentally ill individuals may become violent; however, according to the National Institutes of Health, people with a mental health diagnosis are 11 times more likely to be the victim of violence.

It would help the sector learn from mistakes and complaints, and build on the Equally Well programme to improve the overall physical health of people with mental health and addiction problems.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman has defended the embattled mental health system today, saying it is facing high demand. These projects include creating a new province-wide publicly funded psychotherapy program for people living with anxiety and depression, expanding access to existing psychotherapy programs and supporting integrated service hubs to provide one-stop, walk-in mental health services for youth and students.

Services such as in-school counsellors and other mental health services were found to be cut back as purse strings were increasingly tightened due to the government reportedly providing inadequate funding for education.
