West played a dapper millionaire, Bruce Wayne, who adopted his alter ego as Batman whenever crime threatened Gotham City. And although I've been fortunate to speak with a few actors who have played Batman, the level of fun I experienced never matched every single time I spoke with West.

"This is a wonderful man who I've spent 75% of the time on this earth working with, who has been a pleasure, just awesome talent, a great father, a great family man, a wonderful human being, just a lot of fun and I'm going to miss him incredibly". There are no words to describe how much we'll miss him. The thought of playing Batman was so intrinsic to West that he considered himself to be an automatic choice to reprise the role in Tim Burton's film version.

In an episode of The Big Bang Theory where he played himself, Adam West joined in on a conversation with Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) and Rajesh Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) to decipher who was the best Batman.

"I mean how many actors are lucky enough to play a character that becomes iconic?" he told the Guardian in 2014.

West was the third iteration of the live action batman, propelling a 62-year career that endure lasting success.

On the long-running animated series Family Guy, he provided the voice of the character Mayor Adam West.

He added: I think they recognised that in me from what they'd seen me do before. There was a time when Batman really kept me from getting some pretty good roles, and I was asked to do what I figured were important features. Born William West Anderson in Walla Walla, Washington, he moved to Seattle at age 15 with his mother after his parents divorced.

"He knows that I am Batman", Affleck said, referring to his son.

"Batman" was the role he would remain associated with throughout his life.

It is hard to overestimate Batman's popularity among young baby boomers in the late 1960s. The camp aspect of the show either introduced adults to the Caped Crusader for the first time or rekindled the relationship to the character they once read as kids. He leaves behind his wife Marcelle, his six children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
